Hey

Bret Tanzer is a seasoned Production Designer with over two decades of experience in film and television. His creative journey began in his mom’s garage, where he built miniature sets for stop-motion shorts, screen-printed band merch, and shot scrappy music videos with a crew of like-minded geeks and weirdos. His lifelong love for movies and absurdity was cultivated through countless viewings of B-Horror/Sci-fi flicks and Monty Python.

He studied experimental animation at CalArts in Los Angeles—an education that included equal parts binging Michel Gondry, and Chris Cunningham videos, dollar tacos and surfing. A relentless work ethic (don’t let the tacos and surfing part fool you, I work super hard), and a little serendipity, landed him a career-defining opportunity to contribute to Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, opening the door to collaborations with visionaries like Steven Soderbergh, Tony Scott and Spike Lee.

Bret has shaped the visual worlds of projects like Andy Siara’s time-bending mystery The Resort, Christian Breslauer’s fantastical League of Legends Worlds Opening (Emmy-nom), James Morosini’s dark comedy I Love My Dad (SXSW Grand Jury Prize), and Josh Ruben’s beloved horror-comedy Werewolves Within (Tribeca Official Selection).

Most recently, he brought Goosebumps: The Vanishing to life, crafting ‘60s retro sci-fi landscapes and shadowy government labs to gnarly blood monster chases, man-eating plants and alien encounters in the streets of Brooklyn and Queens.

Bret is a proud member of the Art Directors Guild (IATSE 800) and the Production Designers Collective. He is represented by the magnificent folks at Gersh. In his free time, he travels with his two kids, Lola and August, exposing them to a kaleidoscope of cultures, cuisine, and the beauty of nature's ever-evolving tableau. He also teaches them to be kind and not litter.
